MeshMack is a product of O'Reilly Systems Corporation.
Email info@oreillysystems.com for questions or bug reports. Common questions: FAQ. There is no request-access waitlist.
When reporting a mesh issue, include
- Device models and OS versions (Android and/or iPhone)
- Whether both phones are on the same Wi‑Fi
- Bluetooth on/off on each phone
- App version from Settings (for example 0.4.0+50)
- Copy of Settings → Mesh diagnostics → Copy interop report
Quick checks — can’t find people nearby
- Open MeshMack on both phones and turn Nearby on (Home).
- Allow Location, Bluetooth, and Local network / nearby Wi‑Fi.
- Put both phones on the same Wi‑Fi when you can — that’s the most reliable way to chat today.
- Confirm Bluetooth is on (helps you see each other even before chat connects).
- If you’re outside a saved Place, use Enable for this area, Just this visit, or add a Place so Nearby can listen.
Android and iPhone
Android and iPhone can usually see each other (Bluetooth presence) and chat on the same Wi‑Fi. A pure Direct peer (Wi‑Fi Aware) path across Android ↔ iPhone is still limited by the phone platforms — we don’t claim that works perfectly today.
- Same Wi‑Fi (or the same personal hotspot) on both phones → open Nearby → open a chat.
- Confirm Local network / nearby Wi‑Fi permission on both.
- On Android, set battery use for MeshMack to Unrestricted so discovery isn’t killed.
- If you can see each other but can’t chat without shared Wi‑Fi, try Private link (long-press the person in Nearby): Android hosts, iPhone joins when prompted. This is a SoftAP bridge — useful, not magic, and still being field-hardened.
Places
Places are spots you save. While you’re inside a Place and MeshMack can listen, Nearby can auto-run. Outside your Places, Nearby stays quiet so you’re not broadcasting everywhere.
- Enable for this area — save a Place at your current location and start listening.
- Just this visit — listen this session without saving.
- Manage places — Home → Places or Settings → My places.
Location stays on your device for Places, map, and nearby discovery — we don’t upload your precise location to O’Reilly Systems servers.
Permissions the app asks for
- Location — Places, map, and nearby discovery on this device
- Bluetooth — presence only (who is around), not chat pairing
- Local network / nearby Wi‑Fi — Same Wi‑Fi and Direct peer chat
- Contacts — only if you choose to fill your contact card
